Vestiges · Sylkaen was not born as a roleplaying game to publish. Sylkaen began as nothing more than a world built to host my own campaigns.
A World Born at the Table
I have been running roleplaying campaigns for close to thirty years, many of them in planar settings such as Planescape. Over time, my long-running table reached very high levels of power. The characters became epic, the stakes changed scale, and the published adventures gradually stopped answering what we wanted to play. Past levels 18 and 20, we had to create our own adventures, our own threats and, in the end, our own worlds.
That is how Sylkaen appeared.
For about seven years, the world grew with the campaigns, the scenarios and the needs of the table. What had started as a backdrop for very high-level characters gradually acquired a history of its own, a cosmology, peoples, vanished civilizations and rules. Writing new scenarios to push past the limits of our previous campaigns turned the backdrop into a full world.
A World Made of Sediments
The heart of Sylkaen comes straight from that history. It is an extremely old world whose origin no one truly knows. At unknown intervals come the Ruptures, catastrophes capable of all but destroying the world. Life returns afterward, new lands cover the old ones, and a new civilization grows on top of the previous ones. Over the ages, Sylkaen has become a world of successive Sediments, each keeping the traces, the ruins and sometimes the survivors of earlier cycles.
That vertical structure became one of the founding principles of Vestiges: the deeper you go beneath the surface of Sylkaen, the further back you travel into its history. The old civilizations have not entirely disappeared. Their cities, their machines, their creatures, their knowledge and their mistakes still exist beneath the kingdoms of today. Characters can enter those forgotten layers, explore the Sediments and find the Vestiges left by civilizations, some of which commanded forces no one understands anymore. The deeper they go, the older what they meet, and the more dangerous.
That idea defines the project.
What Vestiges Promises
Vestiges is a game of exploration and fantasy archaeology. Characters do more than comb ruins for treasure: they try to understand why the ruins exist, who built them, what caused their fall, and what their rediscovery may do to the world of today.
An adventure can therefore mix exploration, investigation, confrontation, traps, riddles and the gradual discovery of the past. Going down into a Sediment is as much a dungeon crawl as it is opening a buried page of the world's history.
The long-term ambition is still the one that gave birth to Sylkaen: to start with modest adventurers and follow them all the way to truly epic campaigns, where the stakes grow beyond kingdoms, civilizations and sometimes the ordinary laws of the world. The Sediments, the Vestiges and the Strata provide exactly the depth needed so that this rise in power is not just about facing stronger enemies, but about gradually understanding the true nature of Sylkaen.
The project also serves a much simpler goal: to share a world that, for years, existed for a single gaming table.
Vestiges was not designed as a project meant first to earn a living. It grew out of a passion, out of campaigns played over many years and out of a world that kept growing in files, notes and sketches. Modern tools, including artificial intelligence used for production, organization, illustration and layout, finally made it possible to turn all of that into a game that could be published. Without them, much of Sylkaen would probably have stayed in those personal documents.
The point of Vestiges, then, is less to tell players what Sylkaen is than to give them the means to discover it for themselves.
Descend.
Explore.
Understand.
And one day, look at a Vestige found several adventures earlier and think:
“Now I understand why it is there.”
That is probably where the true promise of Sylkaen lies.
